Google Calendar

13 04 2006

Google released their calendar application today, and after playing around with it for a while I was going to write up a nice review here. However, Strike beat me to the punch and wrote pretty much exactly what I was thinking. So check out Strike’s review of Google Calendar

The only thing I have to add is that I want the ability to get calendar notifications via Google Talk. I submitted the feature request to Google, so we’ll see if it ever happens.

Mobile, Alabama

13 04 2006

I did not know this, but according to snopes, mobile homes are not called this because they can be moved from place to place, but because they are from Mobile Alabama According to the article:

National advertising was still something of a rarity in the 1950s, but as the new national highway system enabled the sale of prefabricated homes to spread outwards (mostly to the north and west) from the Alabama/Mississippi area, more and more consumers were exposed to the houses, liked them, and began clamoring for their own “Mobile homes.” Business boomed, more manufacturers entered the fray, and factories were established all over the U.S. to better serve local customers. Eventually whole communities of these types of homes (colloquially known as “trailer parks”) were created all across the country, populated by homeowners who preferred them to more expensive and more closely-quartered suburbs full of site-built housing.

Also, at the end was neat bit of trivia. The 1974 Lynyrd Skynyrd hit “Sweet Home Alabama” was a reworking of a 1951 radio jingle advertising “Sweet Homes, Alabama.”

Pedal Weirdness

12 04 2006

I went for a ride on my mountain bike yesterday after class and noticed something weird with my left pedal. It felt kind of wiggly, like it wasn’t on straight. I stop to inspect it more closely and saw a few metal shavings around where the pedal spindle attaches to the crank arm. Great. That pedal may be cross-threaded or stripped out now, which will require a new crank arm. The bike is still under warranty, but not being able to ride while a new crank arm is ordered and installed is kind of dissappointing. It’s starting to get consistantly nice and warm out, so going mountain biking at Hueston Woods or Ceasar’s Creek would be a great thing to do on the weekends.

Oh well, I guess I’ll just get the thing fixed, but it really put a cap on the crappy day I had yesterday.
